Supporting Healthy Relationships and Mental Health Among Male Adolescents

This webinar for Sexual Risk Avoidance Education (SRAE) grantees was presented on March 20, 2024 by presenters Morayo Akande, MPH, Arik V. Marcell, MD, MPH, and Annie Smith, PhD, MPH from John Hopkins University, and Kathleen Tebb, PhD, from University of CA, San Francisco. This webinar explored how Sexual Risk Avoidance Education (SRAE) grantees can support young male adolescents in their programs. The presenters discussed key phases in male adolescent development and the current state of male adolescent health. Presenters shared data from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) and Adverse Behaviors and Experiences Survey (ABES) to provide deeper insight into the state of male adolescent sexual and reproductive health as it relates to relationships and mental health. Presenters also explored the role of adolescent dating relationships in shaping health and well-being and delved into the contextual factors related to use and experiences of violence with intimate partners. Presenters reviewed frameworks that grantees can use to guide youth programs as well as strategies and opportunities for promoting sexual and reproductive health, mental health and healthy relationships for male adolescents.
