Adolescence is an important period when youth develop social and emotional habits for mental well-being. Yet depression, anxiety, and behavioral disorders are common causes of illness and disability among youth. When unaddressed, mental health challenges can have far reaching effects that limit opportunities for youth to lead fulfilling adult lives. This two-part training will equip and empower grantees with knowledge, skills, and resources to identify and refer youth with mental health and substance use challenges to support services in their communities.
This training is an individual-based flexible learning opportunity that includes four training cohorts. Please register for the one cohort that best aligns with your schedule. Each training will be accompanied by an optional 60-minute debriefing call to facilitate in-depth discussion, explore key concepts, and deepen understanding.
By the end of this training, participants will be able to do the following, with the purpose of providing referrals to mental health and substance use services:
- Identify common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges in youth, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
- Understand the role of trauma, substance use, and the impact of social media and bullying on mental health.
- Respond to youth in crisis with the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan, a 5-step Action Plan.
- Utilize trauma-informed knowledge, resources, and tools to effectively support and engage youth.
Please note: If you have any questions about specific staff attendance for your grantee agency, or desire to register more than two representatives, please contact your Federal Project Officer.
As a reminder, the notice of funding opportunity requires grantees, at a minimum, to have two key staff persons attend one of two topical trainings offered each year. Details for the second PREP Topical Training will be available soon.
