What is Pride Month?
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Intersex (LGBTQI+) Pride Month is an annual celebration commemorating the events of June 1969, when an uprising at the Stonewall Inn in New York City became a watershed moment in the Gay Liberation Movement.
Champion LGBTQI+ Youth
As youth-serving professionals, you play an important role in supporting the positive development of all youth, including LGBTQI+ youth.
LGBTQI+ youth face unique challenges and associated health outcomes, including:
- Greater health disparities than their cisgender straight peers;
- Higher levels of suicidal ideation than cisgender straight peers;
- Increased risk of experiencing homelessness; and
- Increased experiences of being bullied.
Below, are ways you can advocate for LGBTQI+ youth during Pride Month and beyond.
Ways to Get Involved:
- Explore the archived webinars, “Creating Safe and Inclusive Spaces For LGBTQ+ Youth” and “Practical Strategies for Creating Welcoming & Supportive Environments for All Youth” to learn tips and strategies you can implement in your programming to foster inclusivity.
- Show your support for LGBTQI+ youth on social media by posting a Pride Month post.
- Share information from organizations that serve LGBTQ youth, like The Trevor Project.
