Incorporating Youth–Adult Partnerships in Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Programming

Adolescent pregnancy prevention programs are uniquely positioned to support the development of young people’s strengths, leadership skills, and healthy relationships. These programs can foster opportunities for positive youth development by integrating youth–adult partnerships (YAPs) into their programs. Through shifts in norms, including power, communication, collaboration, decision-making, and shared responsibility, YAPs build and sustain fair and equal decision-making between young people and adults. This resource guide describes the benefits and key components of youth-adult partnerships, and it outlines four models that programs can implement to engage youth based on their organizational needs. The resource guide also shares examples of successful youth-adult partnerships and provides tips and best practices for coordinating a youth-adult partnership.
